This one ought to get most of us commenting! This post is specifically in recoginition of our pets as another new question. What are your pets? What type of breed? What are their personalities like? For those of you who don't have any pets, what kind of pet would you like to have? Any memorable moments?
We have, which some may know already, two cocker spaniels. Marshall is a male, 9 years old, who we have had since a pup. This breed is supposedly not good with children, but both of them have been excellent with the boys - Andrew was a baby when we got him, and there has never been any problems whatsoever. Marshall tends to be an individualist - if you pet him, instead of siiting still enjoying the attention, he gets all wound up and has to go get a ball or toy for you to throw for him so he can run back and forth, back and forth. Hope, our female, we picked up at the SPCA last year. She was abandoned in Boston in Feb. last year, and when they found her, she was a dirty, muddy matted mess, and had also gotten heartworm and lyme disease. The Boston SPCA cleaned her up, treated her, and sent her to Stratham, where they have a better rate of finding homes for older dogs. She's anywhere between 6 and 10 years old - they can't tell us for sure or give us a closer estimation. She's adorable, very friendly and a little shy at times, but loves to be rubbed and petted. Her and Marshall are like brother and sister, and get along well.
I remember one day, we came home from church, when we lived in Dover, and Marshall had somehow gotten a plate off of the counter, set it on the floor without breaking it, which was amazing, considering how high the counter was and how short he is, and helped himself to several cookies. We knew something was up when we came in, because instead of greeting us at the door like usual, he was hiding somewhere. Needless to say, he never did that one again!
I'd comment on the bird, but I don't like it, so since it is Cheryl's bird, I'll let her talk about "Pig". So, speak out on behalf of your pets! You know they want you to! Thanks!

Everyone in our family has allergies, so we are not able to have any "real" pets :( We have tried to have fish for pets, but our first one jumped out of the bowl on the bathroom counter, and we found him all dried up on the floor in the hall :( Our next experience with a fish was a little better, but still had a sad ending. My sister's fish came to spend the winter with us and did fine for a few months. Unfortunately, we think Ty tried to wash it with some hand soap :( When we found it, it was all white and just kind of floating there in the tank. Again, it was a very sad day in our household. Growing up, my family had a female German Shepard named Bo. She was the smarted dog I've ever known. She was such a good girl, and was only aggressive if she felt someone was hurting one of our family members. She was one of those dogs that thought she was a person. She loved to go anywhere we went. She would even ride on my snowmobile with me :) We had her for approx. 16 years, and it was one of the hardest things we'd ever had to do when we finally had to have her put down. If I could have a pet, it would probably be a German Shepard, but I don't know that I could ever find one as smart as my "Bo-Be Girl".
Well, as it seems to be well known already, my little buddy is Zeus. He is seven and a half years old, and he is a purebred English Springer Spaniel. He has more family history than I even know about myself. My wife grew up having dogs inside the house. I am allergic to cats and dogs. My older brother bought my neice a puppy back in 1997, and she brought it over so that we could all take a look at him. Well, shortly thereafter, I learned that there were eight more puppies in the litter waiting to be sold. Well, I asked my wife if she wanted to take a ride and go see them. She didn't know that I had the money for him in my pocket. Now being the shrewd bargainer that I am, I got all the details that I could about the puppies, and soon learned of the one that I wanted. They had named him showdog, because of his strong features. They wanted $400. for him....I got him for $250. Now this was supposed to be a grand jesture on my part to my wife, because I was not necessarily fond of dogs because of allergies. However, I had never had a puppy of my own, and very quickly fell in love with the little things. I paid for the puppy and put him on my wife's lap for the ride back from alton. Only got five minutes down the road and Zeus started whining...we stopped about half way home and switched places. (wife drove and i held dog) Zeus fell asleep in my lap almost immediately....He has been my dog ever since. Zeus is a good name...but now realize I should have named him hemmoroid cause that seems to be where he always is...lol
we have a small farm. i could probably write a small book about all our animals and adventures we've had. i'll summarize with a very short post :) We have: an Australian Shepherd - my pride and joy. I absolutely adore this breed. I've always wanted a herding breed dog - I was looking for a cattle dog, aussie, or a corgie. We looked for almost two years for a dog that fit our lifestyles (not being home much). We finally found a family that was getting rid of Samuel.
Next, we have 3 guinea pigs. We had 6 at one time. Wendy is a huge animal lover and as we lived in an apartment, we couldn't have cats or dogs, so we started with cage animals. We started with two, then rescued two from the shelter, then two more from the local Pet Quarters. One is blind - no eyes at all - due to imbreeding :)
Next, we have a field mouse that wendy rescued. It was a brand new baby - not fur or anything. The mom and other siblings died. Wendy found it while her father was cleaning their porch. She brought it home and researched how to care for it online. It was the size of a dime when she brought it home, and now it's pretty good size little mouse.
And we have a beta fish we rescued from an apartment building - one of our friends is in property management and people leave animals behind all the time when they move out.
I think that's it.
Let me introduce you to
Nikita...
She's my 5 1/2 year old Chocolate Lab. I consider her my first born and hands down the best dog ever. She loves a good off-leash romp at the park, and water...it's doesn't matter what kind - muddy water, creek water, ocean water, and especially swimming pool water. She loves getting dried off after getting wet almost as much.
See? I am a little slow sometimes. I thought pg, that you meant a literal farm, with like sheep and cows, until I got to the end of your comment. That's cool about the little mouse. I found one once at one of our renovation jobs. Only found one baby field mouse, same size. I tried to feed it and keep it warm, but it didn't last long. We also, many years ago, were digging a hole in the backyard, and happened into some painted turtle eggs. Not knowing that they were there, I broke one and felt horrible. However, the other two were ok, and hatched within hours of me finding them, and they went off into the woods. It was neat to see them despite the circumstance.
Well, for crying out loud! I thought this post was about our pets! Not every frigin animal you bunch of bleeding hearts saved in your frigin lifetime...(watch out, have bad cold and meds are just kicking in) (all done in fun) If you want to get into all the animals in wild america then i could write a book....yes i hunt, but hunters are the worlds largest group of conservationists. I have saved a deer on the side of the road who's leg was disjointed..put it back in place and the little button buck walked off after me being able to pet him like my dog for an hour and half. I have rescued birds, which have fallen from their nests. I have helped out stray cats. I have ....oh never mind...I'm tired, irritable, and ornery from my bad cold..I'm going to bed. I was told to a while ago anyways. So there!! (LOL)
Two years ago I had helped a deer cross the road after it had slid into a car on the Stratham traffic circle. The road was icy, and she slid sideways into a jeep while trying to stop. The jeep was fine and she couldn't get back up because of the ice, but she had barely hit the car anyway. I was two cars behind and saw the whole thing. So I got out, having seen what had happened, and stopped traffic, then put my arms around her waist, lifted her up and helped her across the road onto the snow. She was a little dazed and just stood there at first, but a few moments later, she started to walk towards the woods. She stopped at the edge of the woods, looked back at me, then bounded off. Not even a minute later, FOUR cop cars pull up, a few started to ask questions, but most of the rest took off after the dear, since "you can't just let an injured animal like that go." She was fine, and while I don't know the outcome since they insisted I move on, I hope they never found her. I've never seen that many police respond before...
