Here's another question of the moment for those who have a few minutes to spare: Not only what type of music do you enjoy, but WHY? Do you like music that gets you movin'? Or music that relaxes you? Music to just fill up the background, or music that's in your face? I realize that different times call for different musics, but generally, what music touches you, and how does it affect you?
Generally, I like music that's got some pep to it, but not overbearing. I like stuff that I can be-bop in my seat with, without going overboard. I like stuff that tends to come with a bit of energy with it. I like songs that I once I get to know them, I can sing along with them, not that I would even dare singing in front of anyone else. That would be just darn cruel! However, I don't sing in the shower.
So, how 'bout y'all? Post away! Don't worry, like Planet Fitness, this is a "judgment-free zone"!!!
PS - Thanks to Ben for the marquee code! I just wanted everyone to know where I got the scrolling text idea from!

Bonus points for good use of the marque!
Now, on to the music!
Wow, I can write a lot about this, but I’ll try and keep it short. I listen to a wide range of music. I enjoy finding new things that no one else knows about. I was a huge Norah Jones fan six months before anyone even knew who she was.
First, I like “Female Lead” singers. Norah Jones, Mindy Smith, and Sarah McLachlan being my favorite.
My favorite male singer is Lyle “I am not a country singer” Lovett. Songs filled with great stories, and he graduated from Texas A&M (my school) with a degrees in Journalism and German. So, we have a lot in common.
I also listen to some “World” music. Hindi music is very good. If you get a chance, check out “Lagaan” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282674/), a Bollywood movie that was nominated for Best Foreign Film. The soundtrack is amazing. I also really like Misia (http://www.uk.misia-online.com/), a Portuguese “Fado” singer.
Now on to the more of my “unique” favorite artists:
Nellie McKay
http://www.nelliemckay.net
“Funny, witty, and political”
The Slackers
http://www.theslackers.com
“A Ska group. The only group that’s made me want to shake my thing”
Southern Culture On The Skids
http://www.scots.com
“Hillbilly Rock meets Surfer Guitar. Great in concert!”
The Hot Club of Cowtown
http://www.hotclubofcowtown.com
“A fiddle, steel guitar, and a bass. They play in the tradition of old-old-school country. I got to see them in concert a few weeks ago.”
Eddie From Ohio
http://eddiefromohio.com/
“A great folk band. Off beat songs with great harmony. Going to see them for the third time next month.”
The Streets
http://www.the-streets.co.uk/
“An English Garage band. Their latest is a concept album that progressively tells a story. I always talk in an English accent after I listen to them”
Ok, ok, I hear ya….enough of that crazy stuff you wacko! If anyone wants to talk music…you know where to find me!
Wow. Thanks for the post and the compliment, Alan! But like I said, Ben gets some of the credit too for the marquee thing. I like to try new stuff, too. Sometimes I hit the jackpot, and sometimes it's a flop. And kudos on Sarah M.!
Has anyone gotten the new U2 album? I thought Vertigo was great, but when I got the cd, I was expecting more songs like Vertigo, but it just wasn't there. Any other thought on this one? I'd give it a "so-so".
Music usually depicts my mood. Currently, I am enjoying Dido (Thanks to ER playing one of her songs). I also like to chill out to Norah Jones, Sade and Enya if I really want relaxing. Paul Simon is fun to listen to on occasion. Sarah M is a definate. When we go camping with the kids we listen to Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole. Brian and I saw Natalie Cole in concert, she was great. I can listen to anything from celtic to pop. Not into country or head banging though.
I gotta agree with the 80's music too, Donna. I don't get hear as much of it as I used to, but it always brings back good memories. Especially when you hear a song you haven't heard since back then. "Oh, yeah! I forgot all about that one!" That's always a mood lifter.
I enjoy listening to 107.5 frank fm for those of you still in the seacoast area. It is a great combination of some of those '70s & 80s songs by george thoroughgood, lynard skynard, eric clapton, zz top, boston, journey, etc...etc... As far as country goes, I don't mind tobey keith or garth brooks. It's been a long time since i really listened to any country, but like i stated in my blog, i get bored easily, so i need a variety. As far as Christmas season goes, I need to have the Time Live "treasury of christmas" which has a lot of the original greats. For example, "white Christmas" bing crosby, "holly, jolly Christmas" Burl Ives, etc...etc....Just not Christmas season without those songs being played. (could be too many years listening to MUZAK in the department stores-haha)
trans siberian rocks! went to there concert a few years back - absolutely awesome.
as for other music, i generall listen to music while programming ... never buys CDs or listen to the radio much. the radio is same old same old and gets sickening.
most common choices are heavy techno in nature: crystal method, prodigy, underworld, Urban Dance Squad, etc.
one of my newer favorites is evenessance.
I've heard OF Trans-Siberian, but I don't think I've heard any of their stuff, though. I almost picked up the cd at Christmastime, but didn't. I guess I missed out. For those who like classical music on some serious speed, check out this site:
http://www.bondmusic.net/
The Bond Girls - 4 chicks turning up the heat on alot of classical numbers. It's great stuff!
I'll check out some of those sites, Jen - they sound cool. I checked out a few of Alans. And I know what you mean about the classic Christmas songs, Ben. Christmas just ain't the same without them! Shaun, since you're into techno, what about Telepopmusic? Heard much of theirs? They also did "Breathe" for the Mitsubishi commercial. Thanks for all the posting everyone! This is great!
Jenny - Gary Hoey's Christmas cd is a definite class. I'm a little of the opposite of you guys when it comes to Christmas. I get tired of the "classics" real quick, so I like to scrounge around and see what new stuff I can find. This year, it was Diana Krall and the Bare Naked Ladies Christmas CD's. Both excellent. BNL + Christmas = Elves Union Songs! Definitely check it out next year. It even has a Sarah M and BNL song on it, which is one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time.
And I couldn't let your post go without giving a shout out to Hootie. What a great band, especially in concert (seen them 3x!)
One other I forgot to mention was Suzanne Vega. I'm sure most of you remember her from "My Name Is Luka" from back in the 80's, or perhap's "Tom's Diner", but she's had many albums, and I like alot of her stuff. I even have a book by her called "The Passionate Eye" which was good. Incase you're interested, here's the site:
http://www.vega.net
And back to the Christmas song thing, my favorite song of this year is a parody of The Christmas Song that starts "Chipmunks roasting on an open fire, hot sauce dripping from their toes..." It's pretty funny, but I still like the classics - I never seem to tire of them, but then again, I don't listen to them all year...
