Time for another question of the day while we wait for Messenger to recover from whatever the heck it has... Here it is:
What are your hobbies? What are you into collecting or doing with your spare time when you aren't chatting away or posting in the comfort of our great FC? And how did you get into your hobbies? What motivated you? I'll take your answers off the air...
For me, in my spare time, I like to make things with wood, even long before getting into carpentry. I made David's first bed, several tables and shelving items, and several other wood-related items. I recently (within the past year) have been making various walking sticks, which I had shown a limited picture of before. I've always had woodworking in the blood, but I guess that comes from being raised in a family of carpenters.
I also collect coffee mugs, out of love and respect for coffee!! I like the good, hefty, thick, manly mugs, though, nothing that looks or feels like a tea cup. I also collect frogs, having liked frogs for many many years now. Over the years I've gotten quite a collection of various frog paraphanalia, including at one time many live ones, because I hated seeing them stuck in this tiny tank at the pet store. (I set them free last year, after having them for two years, which their lifespan is two to three years, and I didn't want to have to watch them "croak", so hopefully they ran off and raised some children before it was too late.)
I like to write, but aside from here and being busy with work, home etc. haven't had much time for that one in a while. But I have all of you to write to now, so I'm enjoying it!
And my most recent collection is one of card games. I used to spend time playing "Uno" with my grandfather, and those were some great memories. He has since passed on, but that was always fun, so with all the new card games, I started collecting the different decks. My sister recently found me a "Mad Libs" card game for Christmas. That was pretty cool.
So, your turn. What are your hobbies, and why do you like them? Let us know! Thanks!

I use poi, firepoi, I read, and I listen. Normally to music, sometimes to nothing.
Ummm, thanks for that random bit of something we have no clue about. I'm sure it's fun, whatever it is, and when you're listening to nothing, let us know if you hear anything.
Anyone else out there? With hobbies we might be able to understand? (And if not, don't be shy, but at least give us a hint at what it is!!)
ya dude, like, i like poi too, man. but how can that be, man. Like, you like poi, and i like poi. Whoaaaa.... like, totally,......wow....like, i can't believe that (whoaaa,....look at all the pretty colors.....) what was i saying...oh ya dude, pie I like pie. good with ice cream.
You made it! WELCOME!!! It great to see you here! As soon as I saw the screen name "runnergirl" I knew who it was, and it's great to have you here! The basic posting and comments are pretty easy to figure out - otherwise I wouldn't be on here yakking so much, but Shaun is really good at the tech stuff, so he can help best if you get stuck on something. And I saw your web page - great cause and congrats on your fundraising! And tell your sister I said "HELLO!"
Dear Runnergirl, we've missed you and yours. Hope all is well. You will lose about three days trying to read everything, with all the links and all. Time, where do we find it? We make it. Sure as hell dont have any extra to give. Life is short, do what makes you happy, cause in the end....it all doesn't matter.
Hi runnergirl!!! Glad to have you here. I am new to the site also (only been here a few days). I was wondering about the time thing too, but believe me, it's addicting. Always good for a laugh throughout the day. Congrats on training for the Boston Marathon!
Hey there.....
I think it's wonderful that your going to do the Marathon....wish I had the time.....can you bring a triple jogging stroller while you run....just kidding.
Good luck!
You mean BEN is always good for a laugh, right J? You wouldn't be laughing at any of the rest of us, would you? I mean, everybody only likes to laugh at Ben, right? Right? What is everyone looking at? What? Why are you laughing?? Hey, stop it! Stop laughing at me!! Cut it out!!! It's not funny!!! STOP LAUGHING!!!!
(snicker, snicker) You hurt my feelings, J!! (snicker, snicker)
I'm sorry graybeard :( I didn't mean to hurt your feelings :) Maybe I should have said that it is always good for stress relief :) Does that sound better?
By the way, to answer your question about hobbies, collections, etc. My main hobby right now is scrap booking. I got into it when I was pregnant w/Jordan. I was on the board of directors for a crisis pregnancy center and someone had done a scrap book for us to show all of the babies that had been "saved" through the work of the center. I loved the album and knew that I wanted to do something similar for my children. Anyway, I quickly got addicted to it, and have done baby albums for both of my kids, and now I do a school album for Jordan, family albums each year, a Christmas album with a section for each year, a Home Improvement album for Mark to show all of the work we've done on our house, and I redid our wedding album. I do not have any pictures of my early childhood, so I am glad to be able to preserve those memories for my kids. I also make an album for each of the grandmothers each year for Christmas. As far as collections go, Mark started buying me Precious Moments when we were dating, and I have a whole curio of those. My friend from college is married to a man who runs a dairy, so she collects Mary Moo Moos and started sending them to me, so I have several of those, and I also have way too many Longaberger Baskets. (60 at last count). So, there you have it. Nothing too exciting, but hopefully something that my children will enjoy (or sell on ebay) when I am old and gone :)
Well, when I actually had time to have a hobby I used to crochet baby blankets, now I just have a box of yet unfinished projects. I like to plant flowers in the spring and since the frogs have overtaken in our house ;) I collect frogs too! And if it weren't for Brian putting the halt on it, I would probably have a barn yard of animals too. I have two dogs and a bird. Well, I guess the 4 guys count too (just kiddin Graybeard :) )
I would feel much better if you were laughing at Ben. It's always fun to laugh at Ben! ;) Anyway, I was "justhavinfun" - my feelings were'nt really hurt, more like broken, stomped on and pulverized with everyone laughing at me, but that's ok, I usually can't feel my feet anyway in the cold. (What the heck is he talking about? As usual, he sounds insane...)
And thanks to the two of you for answering the question! I was beginning think I was the only one who read the post and had small attempts at hobbies! But you'll notice I wasn't getting cranky about it. I don't care so much about the question as I do about people communicating, so it's all good. Secretary, please make a note of that!!! Oh, wait, that would be me...
Donna, I like to cook too, but I also don't have a lot of time. I really like to bake yummy sweets....esp chocolate. In fact, if eating chocolate is a hobby then I guess I could count that one. And Brian reminded me that my best all time hobby is "stuffing and cramming" and his is organizing my stuff :) Works out great. We balance each other ;)
I almost put eating chocolate down as one of my hobbies, but didn't know if that would count :) M&M's in particular are a huge weakness, but snickers, junior mints, reeses peanut butter cups, any of them do just fine. Gotta run...Ty's up for the umpteenth time in the past 1/2 hour. He's trying to explain to me why he's afraid of the dark. Now Jordan's here to see why Ty is up. Never a dull moment, especially around bed time :)
I'm going to sound really nerdy here, but I guess that's not a suprise to any. My hobbies have always been computer related. I consider myself one of those lucky people whose real job IS their hobby.
Other than computers and technology, I spend a lot of time with music. I have headphones on all day at work. I go see a lot of live music, one of the advantages to living in the Big D, no shortage of local groups and everyone stops by on tour. The Dallas Syphony is great too. I'm always hunting down new stuff. So if anyone "discovers" something fresh and interesting, feel free to drop me a line with a recommendation. I even thinking of picking up Piano lessons again. Is one thing to listen, but another to play.
I've been very lucky and have been able to do a lot of traveling the past few years. Tara and I take off when ever we can. This past year, we went to Paris, Portland OR, Seattle, San Diego (for Tara's first marathon), NH (Portsmouth believe it or not), Cozumel, and Denver.
Finally, I still do some drawing and calligraphy (Thanks, Mr. Dahms) and I squeeze in a Science Fiction novel between technical books when I make time.
Hey Graybeard,....Don't worry buddy, no one is laughing at you...(shhhhh dont let him here you) Just wanted to let you know that the search for sexataries, i mean secretaries (slip on the keystroke) is coming along just fine. I'll post soon.
alan, I'm right there with you. i count myself VERY fortunate with my job. not too many people can wake up in the morning and look forward to their day at work. I really do enjoy what I do - I get to talk about my favorite stuff all day long - with a captive audience :) It does get busy and overwhelming at times, but i've been on the other side with a job that sucks royally and that makes me feel that much more appreciative for what i have now.
I love my job as well....not only do I get the satisfaction of building or fixing things, get to stand back and take pride in my work, but also get to make my own hours! No angry boss demanding a doctor's note if I call in sick, no time clock, no rush, longer lunch break if I want, or no lunch at all.
Hey ya'll,
I like to go four-wheeling in my 1988 Jeep Wrangler here in the mountains of Colorado both in the summer and in the snow. I'm getting ready to add a two inch lift when I replace my suspension--should be fun and look better. I also like to work on it, but I don't have the tools, space or skill like Jammin. . . maybe someday! :-) I always wanted a Jeep since my dad bought his 1978 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade and brought it home and then sold it before I got my license! No, I'm not bitter, no really, I'm not!
I love to travel around the US and the world. Last year I was in 35 states and 5 countries. Already this year I've been in 10 states and should get to around 30. I head to England, Germany, Estonia, and Thailand this year for work too. Gotta love a job that sends you to travel and I get to have some fun and sightsee a little as I do it! Our family has always moved and done a lot of traveling, but I believe I've taken it to a new level!!!
I do enjoy reading and watching movies with my girlfriend and other friends. Gotta love watching the University of Tennessee play football--especially if I can see a live game in Knoxville with 108,000 other fans cramped in the stadium! Go VOLS!!!
As for collecting, I collect currency from around the world as I travel. I also try to collect some art from around the world. I have some beautiful oil paintings from Guatemala! Anyway, I guess that's enough about me. . . . .or should I go on and on and on and on. . . .
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that I love to go snowboarding and skiing here in the mountains. I might be going Saturday! --If you're interested, meet at my place at 6:00 and we'll decide whether we want to go to Keystone, Breckenridge, or A-Basin! :-)
I also love to play soccer--some things never change, do they?
Thanks Rick, I'd forgotten all about the Cotton Bowl until you started talking about those dang Vols. If you want to see a REAL college football game, you have to check out an Aggie game at Kyle Field, the best college football stadium in the country (with Tenn a close third behind Notre Dame - http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/6436849)
The stadium is LOUD! The student body gets together at midnight the night before every home game for "Yell Practice".
Ok that reminds me of another hobby - Fightin' Texas Aggie Football! Every game day, I put on my maroon Aggie t-shirt, and park myself in front of the tv. I look forward to it all week. And when the games not on, I'm on at http://www.texags.com talking about it. I usually make it to College Station for at least one game a year. I never feel quite right until I lock arms and sway with 80,000+ fans and sing The Spirit of Aggieland.
How many days is it again to kick-off?
Gig'em Aggies!
You HAD to get him started on Texas again, didn't you, Rick??? Thanks a bunch. I know, you didn't mention it specifically, but you have to be careful with that type of stuff with Alan - it doesn't take much to set him off, and we all suffer in the long run. (snicker, snicker)
