A Good And Serious Cause

I am sure at some point he will be reading this, and when he does, maybe he'll have time to comment on some more things he'd like to add, but I am starting a care package to be sent to Derek over in Iraq. My in-laws have sent care packages from their church, and I like the idea and have been thinking of it for a little while now. My in-laws, when I told them what I was thinking of doing, gave me some lists from a few newspaper articles about what to send, and I will type that list below.

I am hoping that those of you who could contribute to the package, please contact me and let me know what you can contribute. It would probably be easiest to send money, and I think if everyone kicked in a little, we could send a great package. I'm not so much worried about the items - I have some of the things already. But I imagine that the shipping is going to be the bigger of costs. If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions, or can contribute in some way to the package, please let me know. Everyone should have my address, so feel free to send what you can. If you don't have my address, let me know and I'll email it to you. I will let everyone know what gets sent, how much the cost was, tracking info, etc. Depending on what comes in will somewhat determine what gets sent, so I'd like to make it as big as possible. Here's the list:

Newspapers, magazines, phone cards, lip balm, sunscreen, sunburn relief lotion, playing cards, frisbees, Nerf footballs, chewing gum, non-chocolate hard candy, cd's, AA and AAA batteries, disposable cameras, flea collars, nail clippers, beef jerky, long black dress socks, foot powder, dental floss, wipes, pre-sweetened powdered Gatorade, hanging flycatcher strips, licorice, eyeglass cleaner wipes, stationary, deoderizers, toiletries and first-aid items.

These are the items listed in the news articles. Derek, if you read this and have time to add anything else, PLEASE let us know what you need. Everyone else, anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. And I'm sure a hand-written note or letter would be greatly appreciated, and I can include them all in the box. Thanks to everyone in advance - I know this will turn out great!

Thank you both - excellent!! I'm glad to see some quick responses to this - I'm looking forward to getting this together!

If you could, send some kind of letter or note - I think this will be just as, if not the most important thing to send him. Even if it's just a letter saying thanks for serving our country - those will be the things he will probably treasure most, things that he will know came directly from us. Thanks everyone!

Excellent suggestions, Jen! I kinda figured he'd be sharing, so I was planning on having multiple items of everything. The extra letters however, are a fantastic idea. And I hope that everyone has the time to make them hand written letters - I know for a fact that those mean a great deal to the soldiers, and I'm sure they would mean alot to Derek. Thanks for the ideas, Jen!
